Elders Speaking Chinook Wawa

One of the best ways to learn any language is to listen and one of the best ways to listen is listening to elders. Although it has historically been difficult to find recordings of Chinook online, www.bcchinookwawa.ca has made several amazing recordings available, transcribed and translated by Sam Sullivan. Visit their site to see them all. These recordings are insanely valuable and will teach you much. Sam did a great job translating, but be aware he made a couple of minor slip ups here and there as we all do – just take a look at the Kaltash Wawa! So with that in mind, here is Nuu-chah-nulth chief Jimmy John (born 1876 in Friendly Cove) speaking Chinook:
